FROM THE LOCAL PAPERS · 1994
All Covies tonight
In December 1994, the Mayo News reported an evening in Blouser’s when everyone present was a Covey. They wrote down the roll call before another arrival could spoil it.
A newspaper anecdote. The exact evening is not dated.
Blouser’s gave local extras a preview of the Guinness advert Pat’s Bar in 2004, before its television showing. The newspaper pictured five of those who took part. In the advert, a publican gets rid of his television and conversation takes over.
The television-crushing scene belongs to the advert’s plot, not the evening in Blouser’s.
Breege Walsh’s retirement in 1999 brought friends, family and music into Blouser’s. A photograph caught Tiny Kelly playing his accordion in the packed room. In her interview, Breege remembered the pub’s singing days and traced her family’s time there to 1894.
A farewell to Breege’s ownership, not a permanent closure. The interview’s family-tenure date differs from the current pub website’s 1893 date.
Former cycling companions gathered in Blouser’s for Mickie Palmer’s 80th birthday. The 2007 newspaper caption names the friends and places the celebration at the James Street pub.
The caption says the gathering happened recently; its exact date is not recorded here.
