Revenue's renewed-liquor-licence register lists licence ref WXP0024 as a Publican's Licence (ordinary) - Theatre for THE NATIONAL OPERA HOUSE at HIGH STREET, WEXFORD in CO. WEXFORD with THE NATIONAL OPERA HOUSE as licensee.[1]
Irish Times coverage of the first festival in the new Wexford Opera House said the venue opened for that year's Wexford Festival Opera after the old Theatre Royal was replaced.[2] Irish Times coverage in 2015 said the Department had described the national designation as a way for Wexford to promote the venue as Ireland's only purpose-built opera house and a state-of-the-art opera rehearsal and performance facility.[3] The same report noted that the designation did not reconstitute the venue as a National Cultural Institution.[3]
