Revenue's renewed-liquor-licence register lists licence ref 1001033 as a Publican's Licence (ordinary) - Theatre for THEATRE ROYAL at THE MALL in CO. WATERFORD with WATERFORD THEATRE ROYAL SOCIETY LIMITED as licensee.[1]
The Irish Times reported in 1997 that Waterford Theatre Royal Society Ltd was a co-operative founded in 1956 after the corporation intended to convert the theatre into civic offices, and that performers associated with the theatre included Anna Manahan, Val Doonican and Niall Toibin.[2] In 2009, The Irish Times reported that Waterford's Theatre Royal officially reopened after a EUR2.9 million revamp, and that the Georgian building was built in 1784 to a design by John Roberts.[3] Another Irish Times article on the restoration described the Theatre Royal as the oldest Irish theatre in continuous operation.[4]
