Revenue's renewed-liquor-licence register lists licence ref GAT001 as a Publican's Licence (ordinary) - Theatre for TOWN HALL THEATRE at COURTHOUSE SQUARE, GALWAY in CO. GALWAY with GALWAY CITY COUNCIL as licensee.[1]

The Irish Times reported that Galway's nineteenth-century town hall was officially opened as a municipal theatre in February 1996 after restoration to a neo-classical appearance.[2]

The same report said the opening was performed by the Minister for Arts, Culture and the Gaeltacht, Michael D. Higgins, and the Mayor of Galway, Micheal O hUiginn.[2]

The Irish Times reported that Druid staged The Beauty Queen of Leenane for the opening, and that the theatre was part of a Courthouse Square development that included restoration of the courthouse opposite.[2]

The report said the town hall went up about 15 years after the 1815 courthouse, had more recently been a cinema, and had fallen into disrepair before restoration.[2]
